BOSTON TERRIER BREED INFORMATION
History
Boston Terriers are native to America. The breed originates from a dog names “Judge”. Judge was a brute weighing around 30 pounds with a square, blocky head. His coloring was brindle with a white stripe on his face. He was a cross between a bulldog and a white English Terrier. Judge was sold to an American named William O’Brien. Judge was then sold to another gentleman named Robert Hooper. Hooper bred Judge to a female named Burnett's Gyp who was white. Decades of breeding produced the Boston as we know and love today. A dog with a small, compact body, a great companion, a wonderful , sweet temperament, and that distinct tuxedo markings. Coining the breed the nickname the American gentleman.
Size
Expect a Boston Terrier to be 10-12 inches in height. This makes them compact dogs and the perfect companion size.
Weight
Weighing in at between 12-25 pounds full grown. Their weigh balances out well with their height allowing them to still be sporty. They are sturdy but portable.
Life Span
The Boston Terrier life expectancy is 11-13 years.
Exercise
Activity and exercise depends on each individual Boston Terrier. Some require more stimulation while others are ok just going on a walk. They love to play with toys, run with kids, chase a ball, or play a puzzle game for some yummy treats.
Training
As with any dog early socialization and training are essential. Puppy training classes are a wonderful thing to enroll your puppy in. Working on basic obedience at an early age will benefit you and your dog for the dogs entire life.
Nutrition
There are a variety of quality foods to choose from. Working with your breeder and veterinaran to decide which food is best for your dog. Maintaining a good weigh is crucial to the longevity of your companion. Overweight dogs can develop a host of problems.
Grooming
Grooming needs of a Boston Terrier are very simple. They require weekly brushing to help remove loose hair. They only need occasional bathing. Bostons need their nails trimmed, ears cleaned, and teeth brushed regularly as well.
Health
Health concerns in the Boston Terrier include eyes and breathing. Bostons are a Brachycephalic breed making it harder for them to breathe. Shelter from extreme heat and humidity is essential. Their eyes need to be monitored for any redness or irritation due the prominence for the eyes.
